Goal
Merge tiles to make 2048. After reaching the goal, keep playing to build even larger numbers. The 4 × 4 board starts with two random tiles.
Sliding and merging
On a computer drag the tiles with the mouse across the board or use the keyboard arrows; the direction buttons above the board work as well. On a phone swipe across the board in the direction you want. All tiles slide in that direction until they reach an edge or another tile. Two adjacent tiles with the same value merge into one tile worth twice as much. A tile can merge only once per move: sliding 2, 2, 2, 2 to the left produces 4, 4.
New tiles and points
After a move changes the board, a 2 (90% chance) or 4 (10%) appears in a random empty cell. A move that changes nothing adds no tile. Each merge adds the resulting tile value to your score: merging 8 and 8 earns 16 points.
Ending and ranking
The game ends when every cell is occupied and no equal tiles are adjacent horizontally or vertically. The final board stays visible. Rankings compare total points. Leaving or starting again also saves a positive score. There is no undo or hint action. A new game resets the board and current score, while keeping your record.
