  1. In short

Categories is a casual word game for two to five players. A letter is drawn, and everyone types answers starting with that letter in six categories at the same time. You get the most points for answers nobody else has.

  2. Categories

The categories are country, city, animal, plant, name and thing. The answer language is shared by the room. For example, in a Polish game the letter K might fit the country Kanada, but each field should contain an answer proper to its category.

  3. Writing answers

Everyone types at the same time and cannot see the others' words until the stage ends. An answer must have at least two characters, begin with the given letter and contain letters and permitted text characters such as a space or a hyphen. Enter your answers in the right fields. A matching first letter alone does not yet prove that the word belongs to the category.

  4. STOP and time

You can confirm your set or use STOP after filling all six categories with answers that meet the formal conditions. The first STOP shortens the remaining time to ten seconds at most. When everyone confirms or time runs out, the answers are revealed.

  5. Shared judging

During the checking stage you can object to another player's answer. The game does not decide by itself whether each animal, name or thing really exists: it checks the spelling, and the participants judge the meaning. An answer is rejected when a majority of the other active players object. You can withdraw your objection before judging closes. Checking lasts at most 45 seconds, and everyone being ready shortens it.

  6. Points and winning

If in a category you alone have a valid answer, you get 15 points. A valid answer different from the others scores 10 points. If someone gives the same accepted answer in that category, each of those players gets 5. Empty, formally wrong or rejected answers score zero. After the set 3, 5 or 10 rounds, the highest total wins, and a tied score remains a draw. It is a casual game.
