In short
Mahjong is a game for four players, each playing for themselves. You draw and discard tiles, and the goal is a hand of four sets and a pair. You can win only with at least one yaku, a scoring pattern.
The tiles
There are 136 tiles: three suits (characters, circles, bamboo) from 1 to 9, four winds and three dragons, four of each. One five in each suit is red and counts as a dora. Everyone starts with 25,000 points.
Example tiles: a character, a circle, a bamboo, a wind (east) and two dragons. A winning hand
A winning hand has four sets and a pair. A set is a sequence (three consecutive tiles in one suit), a triplet, or a kan (four identical). The exceptions are seven different pairs and Thirteen Orphans.
A sequence: three consecutive tiles in one suit. A turn
You draw a tile automatically, select one of the fourteen and discard it. Discards lie in front of you in rows of six. Play goes to the right.
Calling
When someone discards a tile, you can take it within 6 seconds. You can call pon when you hold two identical, kan when you hold three, chi (a sequence) only from the player on your left, and ron when that tile completes your hand. Ron has priority, then pon and kan, and chi last. A set you take lies face up, and your hand is no longer closed.
Yaku and riichi
You can win only with at least one pattern (yaku), for example all simples 2–8 (tanyao), a triplet of dragons or of your own wind, or a single suit. The simplest yaku is riichi: with a closed hand ready to win, you discard a tile with the Riichi button and put down a stake of 1000. After that you only discard the tile you draw. The dora indicated in the middle of the table and red fives raise the value but are not yaku.
Furiten
You cannot win by ron if the tile you are waiting for is in your own discards, or if you have passed on a win since your last discard. Tsumo, a win from your own draw, is always allowed.
Points and the end
The value of a hand is han from patterns and dora, and fu from sets, and from 5 han the limits apply: mangan, haneman, baiman and yakuman. With ron the discarder pays, and with tsumo everyone does. When the wall runs out, players ready to win get 3000 from the others. A match is the East round. If nobody has 30,000, the South round is played on until someone has 30,000. The match also ends when someone drops below zero. Each player has their own playing time for the whole match. When it runs out, the player drops out and their seat plays on by itself.
